What should you do when you think you have had a bad interview?

The Tax Recruitment Company will ensure that you are as prepared as possible for an interview and can offer lots of useful hints and tips.

However, we do hear from our candidates that they felt an interview went really badly and they wish that they could do it again.  Nerves get the better of people or an unexpected question can put candidates off for the rest of the interview.

If you feel that your interview went badly here is our advice on what you should do next.

First of all DON’T PANIC your initial impression after an interview can be a negative one as you concentrate on all the parts that you feel went badly and adrenalin pumps round your body. Take a few hours to relax first – and revisit the interview experience later to see if you see things in a different light.  Do not focus on those small slip-ups or the one question that you struggled to answer these will often not be a deal breaker to potential employers.

FOCUS ON THE POSITIVES, we promise there will have been many.  You need to identify these in order to ensure that you repeat these at a second interview or interviews with other firms.  Consider at which points did the interviewers seem engaged with your answer, when did their comments suggest they were impressed or interested in your answers, these are the moments you need to replicate.

Only then FIGURE OUT WHERE YOU WENT WRONG.  You will now be in a mind-set to identify the areas of the interview where you felt you could have improved your answer.  Once you identify those why not work with us at The Tax Recruitment Company to consider how to LEARN FROM YOUR MISTAKES.   Sometimes these can be a very simple fix e.g. using our relaxation tips before the interview or preparing more information on the role.  Others can require a little bit more one to one reflection; The Tax Recruitment Company can provide individual mock interviews and feedback to help you with this.

CONTACT THE POTENTIAL CLIENT, this could be via a thank you email or we can make contact on your behalf. Don’t draw attention to your mistakes, the interviewers might not have spotted them or considered them mistakes. However, use this as an opportunity to add anything about your skills, experience and potential you did not cover in the interview.  If we feel that you really did not represent yourself properly at the interview, we will definitely speak to the firm and explain the situation, even going as far as asking them to provide you with a second interview.

Finally DON’T OVERTHINK this experience, do not dwell on this negative experience, just focus on getting more help for future interviews and believe that the right role can be found for you.
